I’m a Blithering Idiot

Not a Seat

Not a Seat

I have sprained my wrist really badly and it is so sore!

How did I do that you ask? At the airport on Sunday, there were very few seats around the place, and at one point while I was waiting for my daughter I sat on the metal pipes that run along all the walls, probably as a bumper for luggage trolleys. I have always done this at the airport, even though there isย very little space to sit. The pipes themselves are a few inches around, and set very close to the wall. You can manage if you stick your legs out as a prop and balance precariously.

I was doing just that when my foot slipped. In regaining my balance my left hand also slipped and the heel of my wrist bashed hard onto the metal pipe. I just rubbed my wrist a bit and forgot about it. I am always bumping and bashing into things; often so hard that I say to myself, “You’ll remember that when you get the bruise!” I never do!

It was four hours later when my hand started seizing up and I just didn’t connect the dots at the time, wondering what on earth could be wrong with it! Well, I must have burst some tiny veins, or torn a ligament or whatever, because it just kept on getting worse. My wrist and hand were slightly swollen, and my fingers numb and tingly. I was unable to straighten out my fingers, or make a tight fist, without great pain.

So, I was downing anti-inflammatory/pain killers three times a day, despite the fact that they don’t work! I waited 90 minutes for any effect to kick in, to get 30 minutes of barely taking the edge off, then waited hours till I could take the next dose.

I am allergic to morphine, and pain killers just don’t work. Doctors never believe you, but six of my close relatives have the same problem. Morphine does not work. One doctor told me, “Rubbish!” Gave it to me anyway after a major op, wondered why I was still writhing in agony. Gave me more. Still no result. I can see him now, hands spread on the metal bars of my hospital recovery bed, head bent down. Now what? Well, then I start throwing up!!

Usually, if I can get through the first 24 hours, my amazingly fast natural healing abilities kick in. That or vodka!

Life is pain – you just get used to it!

So I’ve been trying the RICE thingy.

I rest my hand as much as possible; so fortunate it is my left hand and I am right handed. I ‘ice’ it now and then by holding a can of coke lite from the fridge, and I have looped a silk scarf round my neck so I can hang my hand in there as much as possible, since you’re supposed to keep your hand raised above your heart! Oh, and I am wearing a wrist support from my kids’ roller-blading phase; so useful!

Do you know how difficult it is to turn on a tap and fill a jug, to open a jar of coffee, hang out the washing and a hundred other little things; one-handed? I can still type pretty well one-handed, but typing capitals while holding the shift button is a bit tricky! But I can’t do any of the things I planned to – like use the garden shears to prune stuff in the garden. (Actually I don’t mind notย doing that so much!)

And it is all my own fault. Little Monkey, for once, is completely blameless. She only snapped off a finger; I have done in my whole hand!

post script: 100 bonus points if you know which movie has the line, “Life is pain – You just get used to it!” Answers and winners announced in the next post.

post post script: Update – Stopped with the pain killers yesterday lunchtime. Hand still sore and stiff, but much better!ย

Last year I walked barefoot through the house. Didn’t pay enough attention and SLAMMED my foot into the leg of the coffee table. Talk about bothering idiot!
I screamed in pain. When I looked down I saw my right little toe sticking out straight sideways! I popped it back (screamed again) and had to wrap my toes for about two weeks to get it to finally stay in place. Occasionally it still drifts sideways, but I just push it back.

This blog post title made me laugh out loud! I have felt that way so many times. If it helps, I don’t think you’re an idiot. I’ve done something very similar and I felt so embarrassed, so I can totally empathize with your experience.

Thank you! You are the Only one to say I’m Not an idiot! ๐Ÿ˜€ I used to embarrass myself all the time, as I’m such a klutz! Now I just shrug it off! It’s not gonna change – and I have passed my klutz genes on to one daughter! – She is so grateful ๐Ÿ˜‰

Am not liking the sound of this!!! How on earth did you even think you could sit on pipes and get away with it!!!! I hope the pain is gone by now ๐Ÿ˜ฅ but did you manage to sit with LM and sip some tea? Back home my mom would put some foul smelling ointment which had amazing healing properties …it’s old Ayurveda / herbal stuff…just the thought of it perhaps cured me of my pain in a hurry!!!

Because I Have been getting away with it for years ๐Ÿ˜€ If my foot hadn’t slipped I’d have been fine! Erm – this required vodka not tea ๐Ÿ˜‰ And LM did behave on her walks for me!
But I know just what you mean about an awful smelling cure from one’s Mum! hehe But luckily my hand is almost back to normal! Hard to believe as it was so incredibly sore!

Thank you Ady ๐Ÿ™‚ My hand is Much better today – I am well on the way to full recovery. I am just clumsy! So it was my own fault! ๐Ÿ™‚
Please don’t stress about “missing” a post – tho it is always nice to “see” you ๐Ÿ™‚ My daughter is busy during the day with a friend’s wedding this week – hen parties etc, so I have time to blog more than anticipated. ๐Ÿ™‚

Guys have all men stag parties for the groom and girls have all girl hen parties for the bride, before the wedding. A group of friends organise things to do. It has become quite involved! For my daughter’s friend it is not too exhausting. They are going round wine farms during the day, and ending up at a club tonight. The bridesmaids organise it all for the bride.

Aww Sci! Your luck is horrible! No x-ray or is it too expensive?
I don’t have any suggestions for pain – or the swelling. Best you can do is your ‘RICE’ option. Maybe co-q-10 to help blood flow? I can’t think of any homeopathic suggestions.

I hope you heal up where there are no lasting effects!

Thank you so much ๐Ÿ™‚ I am very lucky in that my hand is healing so quickly, it is only slightly sore now! I’ll make sure to use it sensibly so it won’t seize up. ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s no good. I hope you feel better soon. Bummer about the morphine. I looked up the “life is pain” quote. It sounded very familiar to me but I couldn’t place it. I’ve seen the film and I remember it – Long Kiss Goodnight.

Yes, that’s it ๐Ÿ™‚ Entertaining movie! My daughters and I quote the line quite often! Maybe because pain killers don’t work on any of us, so you have no option but to get used to it! ๐Ÿ™‚
PS My hand is so much better thank you ๐Ÿ™‚

Vodka! That always makes things better!

If it makes you feel any better, I decided last week that I could totally grab a pan that had just come out of the oven. Note: I should not do this again. But I did get a chance to work on being one-handed!

Oh No! That sounds so painful! Burns are my worst dread ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I hope it healed quickly? And oh yeah to vodka! I mean really – is it any worse for you than heavy painkillers?

It was OK the next day – though it still looks bad, it’s more or less back to normal now.

And I helped decrease the pain by drinking that night. If nothing else, it made me happy!

Sure it’s just a sprain and you didn’t actually break something?
As for pain relief, Hubby can’t take morphine, but we discovered when his suitcase (and medication) went for a tour in Ireland without him that Guinness and paracetamol are a great
    substitute for the heavy stuff!

I Was worried – at midnight when woken with the pain – that it might be broken! But nah! It is So much better 24 hours later, must have been a sprain. Paracetamol doesn’t work for me either ๐Ÿ˜ฆ – but come 5pm a shot of vodka does more than any pain killers ๐Ÿ™‚
And I don’t think I can get Guinness here ๐Ÿ™‚

Sorry to hear of your sprained wrist! It must be terrible as I know pain – ugly word Pain. Take care and go for Physio as it will help with healing. Rest your hand. It helps healing. Trust me. ๐Ÿ™‚

Aw, Thank you so much. I know you have much worse pain ๐Ÿ˜ฆ My wrist is so much better today, thank you, but I will rest it as much as possible, and then do hand exercises. I don’t feel like paying hundreds of Rand for physio, but I am sensible (believe it or not!) If it stops improving or gets worse, I will go to the doctor. People always talk about wanting to be “Happy”. Knowing people with chronic illness and pain, we would all settle for No Pain!

Just to share it costs me SGD130 per hour for physio! Dunno how much Rand that is! have a good day ahead and remember no house chores and will pass your contact to my brother who is a wine importer into HK ๐Ÿ™‚ I am just wondering what wine labels you make!

SGD130 is R1105 – according to google! – which seems about right for an hour’s physio. I have only been for 20 min sessions, when I slipped a disc in my back years ago. Luckily, my hand is healing itself rapidly, so I can save my pennies!
Wines made in SA that might be exported are Nederburg or Fleur du Cap. Probably google will help your brother more than I can. All I can say is – SA wines really are excellent, and affordable. Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

Hmmm- Are you thinking of my cheeky “I live here” post – with a photo of a vineyard? I live “here” as in 15 minutes away from lots of vineyards ๐Ÿ™‚ Tho we do have Hanepoort grapevines in the garden, which produce lots of green grapes.
Since I damaged my back I do lots of stomach and back strengthening exercises (77 push ups, 45 sit ups etc) and am very careful and protective of my back, as I know it is a weak point. Thank you for your concern – I hope your back can heal a bit more and hurt less. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love driving through Australia – Perth & Adelaide for wine buying trips with my family and it is fun ๐Ÿ™‚
Maybe one day I will do S Africa as some of its wines are indeed as you say, pretty great ๐Ÿ˜€
Thanks for sharing and am enjoying your blog tremendously.

Ahhhh. Can’t be too bad if you’re writing this. lol
I understand very well about morphine. I have had it twice and each time I start flying. I see lights at the end of a tunnel and all sorts of crazy things. I mention if even if I only go to a doctor to pay the $$. I carry a note in my purse to not give it to me. I suppose I should wear it around my neck.
I don’t go to movies but googled something about The Long Kiss Goodnight. That doesn’t sound too painful. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ah – Don’t be fooled by the title of the movie – It’s quite violent!
As to my typing yesterday – it was one-handed! (see fine print ๐Ÿ˜€ ) My hand really was incredibly painful, but fortunately healing rapidly.
Maybe if I “flew” with morphine I wouldn’t mind so much? I get nothing at all from it!!
