– Both dogs choose to dig themselves a hollow and lie outside under the shade of the trees. This is unusual because Mr Spaghetti Legs always prefers to be inside.
Dogs will scrape away the surface of the hot ground (soil/pristine lawn, they care not which) to reach the cooler soil underneath. They then stretch out in their hollow and sleep away the sweltering day.
The past master at this was my old dog Madam. Every day she went to her sleeping hollow and scraped away the top layer of hot soil. After a while, the shallow hollow became a deep pit. Still she continued to scoop out the top layer and then fall into her pit.
She would lie down there, with her front legs up at right angles and her little paws grasping the edge of the pit.
Scifi: Surely you can’t be comfortable like that, Madam?
Madam: Beddy!
can you imagine if sparky had met madam we might have had our very own gone with the wind?

Breck loves his ‘hang out holes’. He uses them for many things.. hiding, toy storage and of course, like yours, chillin’!

Cute pictures of the dogs but I don`t envy you that heat. I hope you have some sort of cooling at home (or are you digging hollows too?). 😉 What is the temperature outside now?

Temps vary but it has been 33C already. We don’t have aircon or anything, but usually there is a breeze at some point and we can all breathe again! Till then, we keep drinking ice water!
But the dogs have it right – Sitting under the trees is the coolest place to be!

The world is indeed not flat. Dog culture, unlike the weaker humans, is world wide. Digging the sleeping hollow, a good fetch (be it tennis, baseball or cricket), is a good fetch. And if given the choice, will poop on a neighbor’s grass any day.

Sometimes I have a hard time understanding how animals choose to sleep in an uncomfortable postures, but it looks like it is what makes them feel most comfortable 😀 By the way, madam looks so pretty with her shiny and fluffy hair ❤

For uncomfy positions – Cats rule! They squish themselves into the tiniest spaces! And Thanks – Madam was our most beautiful looking dog 🙂

I actually have plan to do so, but I can hardly capture them because they don’t like taking photos 😦 I will post it when I can capture them well. Thanks for the suggestion Sci! 🙂

Our chickens used to do this too, then flatten themselves and their wings out to toast themselves in the sunshine. Never known a dog to do it though. Madam was a beauty.

Aw thank you 🙂 Yes she was very pretty – border collie crossed with golden retriever (best guess!) Lots of dogs destroy our gardens here in a hot country!
I have seen pigeons taking a “dust” bath in the soil – and lying with a wing outstretched. First time I saw I thought it had broken its wing!

Your dogs seem to be so relaxed and enjoying the shade! Madam is gorgeous. She reminds me of the TV series Lassie. 😊

She was our most beautiful looking dog – but for Lassie you gotta go back to our first dog – Lady – who was (i think) a rough collie cross (Lassie) 🙂

Ooh….ok thanks, I will dig into your blog posts to find Lady 😄

My post “What empty nest” has a photo gallery of all six dogs I’ve owned. 🙂 :Lady is also the star of “Lassie to the rescue”
Madam has her portrait in #4 and #7.
Happy hunting – and may it take your mind from feeling bleurgh for a few minutes 🙂
