My ancient apple tree continues to produce little green apples. Unfortunately, they are very sour, and the only animals that eat them are Little Monkey and Sparky the squirrel.
Something else has obviously had a go at them, as you can see small holes and sap leaking out of the apple at the back. Any ideas what causes this?
Even though most branches support apples now, there are still some only just coming into blossom.
So, you can see, as my previous post says: it is Still alive.
To hear Frank Sinatra sing the song, written by Bobby Russell in 1968, try this link Little Green Apples
Which variety ?

Sorry I have no idea. The tree was already here when we moved in. π

I never thought Little Monkey and squirrel like sour fruits. Do they think it’s too sour for them? I wish those green apples would taste sweet. If they were sweet, I guess it would be good for making apple pie…hehehe yumm π Thanks for sharing those beautiful pics with us Sci! π

Some kind of fruitflies I guess π But the hole seems a bit bigger than its size I think … Though I don’t like apples much(only the crunchy, strong taste variety are ok for me),I loved it’s flowers π

I’ve always loved apple or pear blossom, as it is so small and delicate, and appears on a seemingly dead tree π

I think “little Green Apples” is a song here in the U.S. We used them for ammunition in “pitched” battles with other kids. They hurt like a b*&#h if you didn’t dodge in time. Then we’d eat a bunch and get roaring tummy aches.

Yes – At the end of my post I include a link to Frank Sinatra singing the song π
And Ouch! to throwing them at other kids!! π

The apple wounds most likely are ‘coddling moth’ (Google it, they are fly like), if you cut open the apple, there will be a worm in it. Yuck. I’m not sure if you have different pests down there. .. That is my guess!

Aha! I thought you;d have an answer for me π Thank you π – Maybe that is why LM likes them so much! Extra protein! π

If you want to spray for these, I can let you know how. However, nothing is going to make the apples sweet. Maybe you can make applesauce! Mmmm!

Aw, Thanks π But I think I’ll just leave them. Apple sauce Yep π
