I often walk past this interesting tree on my dog walks.
I call it the Puzzle Tree, because pieces of bark fall off in chunks, and you can pick them up off the ground and try to match where they came from on the trunk, by the pattern.
It is the only one of its kind around my area.
Little Money takes a closer look!
post script: A search on google says this tree is an American Sycamore.
post post script: Yesterday’s post, the enigma of Snow White’s apple, was solved by Midwestern Plant Girl, who wrote a post about it a while back, which you can read here. I had read this post, but forgotten (doh). So the apple is a chimera. I like the chimera cat in MWPG’s post.
My internet is really slow here and I’ve been trying to load this page for ages to comment on it. I just want to say that the tree looks a bit like an Australian paper bark tree. I don’t think that’s the scientific name but it’s how everyone refers to the tree and when you see the bark you’ll understand why.

Aw, Thank you for taking the time to comment – Much appreciated. 🙂 I know all about slow internet!!
Quick google – Yes, I see the Australian paper bark tree, it is a similar peeling of bark. 🙂 Makes for an interesting tree 🙂

We have many of these trees here in Arkansas. If they are in your yard, the make such a mess when they drop their bark, but they really are a pretty tree.

They are pretty trees – fortunately for me, this tree is no where near my place 🙂

Fantastic imagination Sci! It did look like puzzles 😉 Did you actually try to match them? 😛 BTW, LM and SL looked so cute in the first picture. They looked like they enjoyed the sun so much and were waiting for the treats. 😀

I match them in my head! I like to see where they’d fit 🙂
Yes, my dogs were very happy – they love Walkies! It was 5pm – in autumn – can you believe it! 🙂

Ha! I’m a bit late in joining the party.. But, Sycamores are a fav of mine. These grow here also. They look really cool in the winter when they have their seeds hanging on the branches without the leaves. It looks like a Christmas tree with ornaments. =-)
Thanks for the shout out!!

It’s never too late to join the party – As long as you brought wine! 😉
Hmm I really don’t remember the Christmas tree look of this sycamore – but winter is still on its way, so maybe then. 🙂
And you’re very welcome for the ‘shout out’ – Thanks for the info! 🙂

There are some of these Sycamore trees at the park where I used to often take my handicapped students when we’d go outdoors. They are huge trees and are truly impressive and different! 🙂

We had a monkey puzzle tree that came free with a bungalow we bought. It stood fourteen feet high and we didn’t want it, so advertised it for sale, ‘buyer collects’.
A young couple arrived with a trailer and two shovels. They ended up digging an eight foot deep hole to get the root out, then the four of us carried it (dragged actually) to the trailer.
They offered us £10 less than our asking price, but Hell, who was I to quibble and ask them to put it back?

They were very happy anyway, as they had just paid £70 for a tree which stood just two feet high and we only wanted £60 for our fourteen footer! £50 was therefore good enough for us!!

I saw the picture and was like, is that a sycamore? Where I used to live in Indiana, they grew everywhere! So much so that the local college team, Indiana State University, is nicknamed the Sycamores!

Interesting 🙂 I only see this one – but we are SA not USA 🙂

I’d probably be in the same boat if an African tree were to end up here (and promptly die, because it is cold. But it would be interesting for its brief life!).

Aw haha – but you’d need a tree from parts of SA that get snow in winter (Yes – they do exist! )

Those are not the spots I see on the tourist ads! (With good reason, I suppose!)

Yes I suppose so – they’re not going to advertise, come to sunny SA – oh but go Here, where we also have snow in winter! 🙂

Hawaii keeps its snow under wraps as well – though there is apparently enough that you can snowboard!

Scifi is there in full colour on Sat’s post Protection. Funny not one person commented, which is fine, cos then at least I didn’t get any negative comments! 😉

SL and LM Are good with people – LM freaks out at other dogs – and cats – and squirrels etc 🙂 Most people’s dogs will however, protect them from a perceived threatening situation. Had a total stranger in the house the other week, and she was cuddling with LM in no time. 🙂

My Ex boyfriend has a beagle. He used to tell me that if a thief burgled his house, the beagle would help the burglar with the loot….equally friendly pooch with people. But went bersek after snails barking that drove him nuts!! Hmm maybe SL and LM are distant cousins many times removed ha ha😉
