While it is nowhere near real winter yet, the temperatures have been dropping significantly at night, and it is time to begin reclaiming some of the garden. The two months or so of actual winter are not nearly long enough to hack back the jungle.
One drawback of a sunny climate is that everything grows; the unwanted along with the wanted. This morning I decided to tackle some of the neighbour’s vines on my side of the fence and behind my bougainvillea.
Even with very thick gloves on, the bougainvillea still got me good!
The first cut I didn’t even know about.
However, as the long poisonous thorn ripped through my palm, this second gash had me yelling out, “Fiddlesticks!”
Ouch. Gardening is a dangerous endeavour.

Apparently when I do it anyhow! 🙂

The upside with the cooler weather here is the comfort of wearing long sleeves and pants for protection. However, it doesn’t stop them from pulling your hair!
Heal fast my friend! 😆

Glad to hear 🙂 I am worried … You have to take special Tetanus injection as it was caused by wires , or some different course of treatment ?

It was just the thorns of the bougainvillea plant that scratched me – so I won’t be needing anti-tetanus. (tho I had an injection some time ago – and they last 5-10 years I think.) 🙂

Ooo I had taken one in 2002 I think , I am scared of injections and this one had a bigger needle 😦

Tetanus is a big shot – but worth it! 🙂

One of the problems of gardening…though I would love to live somewhere I could have a bougainvillea – they are absolutely stunning. I think I could handle the scratches if I got to look at one all the time!

And you wouldn’t get scratched at all if you just looked! 🙂

It gets really cold here in Illinois at night still! I managed to get poison ivy (from cutting saplings – fiddlesticks – growing on our river bank) even though it’s (i.e., the ivy) not actively growing yet! Fiddlesticks!

Just used that word fiddlesticks yesterday. Sorry you were injured. I fight with plants like that sometimes too. Take care. Very nice photo.

Horror film from the 60’s, “Day of the Triffids”, where plants attack humans. Looks like you have the modern version going there.

haha I know the film and book! Yes, I did feel attacked! 🙂

I love bougainvillea. We call them “paper flowers” because when they dropped to the ground, they dried up into tissue like gift-paper. I have forgotten that the these climbing vines have nasty thorns. That was a deep nasty cut you have. Hope it will heal fast 🙂

Ugh, that looks painful. I also have a few cuts on my hands, from the garden. It looks like the warmer it gets, the more the plants grow, and I need to be out there to tame them even more often 🙂 It can be fun, but painful, when you get wounds through the gardening gloves. Take care and have a lovely weekend!

Fiddlesticks, my tuckus! My heart goes out to you. But really 2 months of winter! We get 4 or 5 and this year we hit temps of -40 C. Your pictures help me make it through. I’m envious.

Fiddlesticks – You are the only one to pick up on that!!! hehe
Cape Town is so much closer to the equator, that the only bad weather we get is the storms coming up from the Arctic, where we are the first port of call!
And I know you guys in the N hemisphere, who have had such a long harsh winter, don’t enjoy all that cold, but I love seeing the snow photos. 🙂

Big ouch there!! Sorry to see your “wounds” of the battle against “bougie” – but it is gorgeously thick!! Guess you need industrial steel gloves like the ones workers use at steel mills. Worth investing in a pair as it is safety accredited 😉 Next battle, Sci1!!

I wasn’t even pruning the ‘bougie’ really – just trying to get at the vines behind it! 🙂
