So what’s going on with WP these days?
I noticed, before I went on holiday, that my visitors and views were declining, after having risen slowly but steadily since I started blogging.
No worries, I thought, it happens; and I am not trying to be the most popular blog out there. (Yeah, yeah! Just as well, I know!)
But as nebusresearch has noted, it seems that WP may no longer be counting all the stats; eg from mobile devices?
I really noticed this on Tuesday, when a WP friend from India visited my blog to catch up, and liked and commented on lots of posts. None of this registered in my stats! It showed no visits from India whatsoever and the views/likes/comments also did not show.
Now, like I said, I’m not a big blog: I ‘know’ each and every one of my visitors. It sucks when they have taken the trouble to visit me and do not register. I wonder, am I doing the same thing over at their blogs?
What gives? Any answers anyone?
I come back after 5 days and I see so many changes !!! I can’t even begin to grasp and understand and comment !!! I hardly see stats these days, 1st I am absent , 2nd I still find it confusing ! But I was doing ok without them, now the new reader page has too high contrast (all white) .. kinda hurting eyes ! and reading feels difficult, and commenting even more so ! I am stupefied !

I agree with you. It may be faster?? but the Avatar’s are so tiny you can hardly see who has posted and it does not show the number of ‘likes’ received so far either. I do wish WP would consult the bloggers Before making sweeping changes just to ask what we like or need!
And I’ve given up with the stats!

Exactly !!!! Earlier, one look at picture and I knew, who posted what, now, I have to read the tiny words to know ! Last time also, despite of protest they changed the things, but they should also make it flexible on whether to adapt or not like simple version of gmail and rich version of gmail !

I know! I try not to complain too much as they are trying to improve things, but I did write a comment to them about how difficult it is to read in the Reader now – grey print on a very bright background, as you said. I am waiting for a response . . .

I didn’t even know there is a change in their system until I read this post Sci…I prefer the old system to be honest 😛

It’s changed even more, with a ‘new’ WP Reader 😦 But you’ll be happy to know, that Your visit counted 🙂 🙂
It’s good to see you back 🙂 I popped by your blog when I returned from my hol, but you were away on yours!
I look forward to reading all about it on your blog soon, and I hope your neck pain is better? 🙂

I can’t believe how much it changed since I was away, but glad my visit counted 😀
Aww I’m happy you checked my blog when you returned from your holidays even though I haven’t posted anything new yet. I should be posting again in a day or two 😉 My neck only gets tiny bit better…I guess she is taking a baby step to get better lol 😛 Thank you very much for asking sweetie!!! ❤

And today I am moaning some more – about the New WP Reader!!
Sorry to hear your neck is not much improved. That is really awful. I hope you can find out the cause soon, and then start to get better 🙂

It’s google that tallies up the sats, so… it’s interesting that google shows millions of visitors on their blogspot blogs, however, this is not the case with WP.
Stats are cooked, no doubt about it, just like election results, electoral polls, etc.
There is another possibility: many people could be using the Tor browser which leaves not one trace of having been anywhere on the net: https://www.torproject.org/
Snowden says it’s the only browser he uses, due to its anonymity.

Thank you for this – and Interesting about the secret browsing 🙂
I don’t think anyone will ever understand the stats! 🙂

I’d noticed a change in numbers, as well. Often the views stat doesn’t change because the post had been viewed not by visiting the page, but by reading the post on the reader.

Yes, there is that. 🙂 Just like you say, the numbers seem to have changed.

Dear Sci. I have noticed that sometimes I am just not able to “like”. I press the like button and the post is not liked. I try this over and over again and it does not work. I have had this problem recently. I understand the frustration<3 I also wonder if my likes does not show up on more blogs and blog posts than I realize. Hugs, Isabella

I get this problem sometimes too. When I try to like a post it says NaN – and won’t stay clicked. No worries tho 🙂 I appreciate any visit, whether it is counted or not 🙂 Thanks for yours 🙂

What an interesting post you write. I have decided to ignore my stats because they make no sense, they do not add up to the amount of comments etc. I really enjoy visiting blogs, whether I am counted or not 🙂

Yeah you’re right 🙂 The WP community is a great one, whether they are counted or not 🙂

Unfortunately if users are commenting and liking from the reader then their visits are not counted. It’s only when they click through to your site that they’re counted in the stats. They could also be commenting from notifications in the mobile app and it’s the same thing there. Do you know whether your friend in India actually visited your site in a web browser?

Hmm I’ll have to ask her, but she Used to register. And the comments were new, not replies. I was just curious. Thanks so much for replying 🙂

Yes, I’ve noticed the same thing. By the way, I get India, but you or others from SA almost never register on my stats.
Apart from that, the activity (and the stats) usually go down from about June to September.
Don’t worry, you blog is still much loved. 🙂

Ah, Thank you. 🙂 I’m not really worried – as I blog for fun not numbers. I just wondered.
And I usually like and comment on your posts in my Reader, because trying to load a blog takes a long time with my slow internet.

I have noticed, right from the beginning, that my stats don’t add up with likes, comments etc and that views and visitors stats often seem odd. Also, I’m not sure if it counts if we look at each others blogs from the Reader? Never mind, you know your loyal fans love you 🙂

haha Thank you RRatz 🙂 Yes, I don’t think it counts from the Reader, but comments and actual visits used to count. I’m just curious.

I think your guess is right. My stats do not register people reading from hand held devices as well. Perhaps the counters at wp are on summer vacation 😉 ha ha.

Yes, possibly. I did peak for Dec/Jan, when there were all those part-time holiday bloggers!! 🙂

There are numerous oddities re WP stats. I have had many occasions when there are Views recorded ……….. but no visitors! I am still working on that logic! 🙂

haha Yes, that is a conundrum! 🙂

Maybe technology ran off and left WordPress in the dust. I know several people that use to follow me became weary of blogging and decided to go back to their lives before WordPress.
I am sure there are many things that do not get register on these social media sites.

Yes, I also have ‘old’ friends that no longer blog. That’s fine and all part of the blogging world. It’s just that if you do visit someone and comment, it ought to show up. It used to do so.

I noticed a similar thing but I had attributed the decline to my change in format because I haven’t really been posting any (good?)photography and I haven’t been as active visiting new blogs. Also I’ve long assumed that anytime I read something from the “reader” and don’t actually click a link to take me to the full blog that WP can’t be bothered to let the person know I still read it.

Yes, I get that bit about the WP Reader, but if someone actually visits your blog and likes and comments on posts, that ought to count. My Indian friend was MIA again today! I just like to know what’s going on. 🙂

Interesting.
I had noticed my views go down a bit this last week, however I chalked it up to our independence day holiday enticing folks to be outside, not in front of a ‘puter.
I do 99% of my reading and commenting via my cell. It’s easier and I have these 🍔🗿💣 fun icons to play with. .
I don’t think the WP tracking is off. . Per se. They have a fairly good system, I think.
To test my theory, I think the only way to do it would be to attach another tracking system to your blog. Google Analytics was easy to use, if I remember correctly.
I’ll look into my stats and see if some of the hits are MIA like you’re noticing.

I think the WP system has changed. It was just really obvious when there was nothing from India – which happened again today! I wouldn’t notice if any USA stats went missing, as most of my hits are from there. I just like to ask questions anyway! 🙂

I had no idea that was happening. I’ll be curious to see what other readers share about this here.

Though I have a “smart” phone it hasn’t done much for me except make a few actual telephone calls now and then. I would have headaches from eyestrain trying to read the small screen and I refuse to look like a darn fool walking about with my attention on a tiny glowing thingy ignoring all of the world passing by. My 13″ macbook is barely large enough to read. It is, however, a bit of an improvement over the 12″ black and white TV I had in my first apartment after college.
So now that we know these little boxes don’t actually count as real computers for wordsmiths, do you think their users also don’t count with advertisers and retailers? Probably not. Somewhere out there in cyberspace a gremlin sits with an abacus and a paper and pencil logging in all the “hits” on Amazon or ebay or the like so that charges can be computed and passed along and those creepy targeted pop ups make back down the electron pathway.

haha I like the idea of the abacus and pencil and paper!
However, I think you’re right about the advertising. I even get it on a phone whose number I have not given out!!
