These are the cravats that I made for the groom and his best men to wear at my daughter’s wedding last month.
My daughter cold-dyed the silk by laying it out in crumpled folds on a mesh, placing ice cubes on top, sprinkling with a powdered dye and leaving it over night. As the ice cubes melted and the dye seeped through, this marvellous mottled effect was achieved, with patterns looking like flowers in some parts.
I also made small matching handkerchiefs to wear in the breast pocket. When these and the cravats were set against a black shirt or suit, the men looked spiffing!
post script: My daughter was quite capable of making these herself, but was caught up in other wedding things, so it was nice for me to participate.
