Birds appeared out of nowhere, when my sister and I walked round Newmillerdam in Yorkshire, on my recent visit to the UK.
They were so keen to reach us they each left a wake.
The duck in the foreground here is not actually walking on water! There is a weir, as you will see in the next photo.
We didn’t have any bread, which is perhaps just as well, as it is bad for them.
But I used to come here often and feed all the water birds, when I was a kid, and beyond.
If possible, I always like to make this nostalgic trip, when I visit my home town.
I seem to be looking at your trip backwards. That’s the trouble with WP. At least I’m going back and looking at the pictures. π

Ah, it really doesn’t matter! I am still writing about my trip a bit at a time, and the order shouldn’t affect the post, hopefully. I’m just happy someone is reading them. Thank you π

It’s so soothing seeing the ducks swimming even though you haven’t had anything to feed them π Seeing them swimming in front of you must remind you a lot of your sweet childhood memories…It probably makes you miss UK more π

We occasionally feed local ducks (in the river) parrot pellets (that I use to feed the parrots here at home); they love it and it is good for them!
Ducks and geese are rather intelligent birds! π

I used to give parrot pellets to my hamster – he loved them!
I think birds as a whole are pretty intelligent – except maybe the pigeon! But even he has amazing navigational skills π

I’m sure the ducks were thinking they would get a free meal! (Thank goodness I checked this comment b4 posting… there was an ‘i’ in place of the ‘u’ in duck) π¨

There are weirs at the locks here on the river. Ducks, swans and geese can always been seen in the vicinity, sometimes bathing in the rocky waters before it cascades over the edge to the level below. They seem to have no fear, but then I suppose if push came to shove, they could always take flight!

What amazes me is how sure-footed they are; even the chicks! π
Good to see you back! π

It is always nice to revisit home, catch up with family and remark this used to be there or yoicks! What did they do to this or that! Great post as it reminds me of what nostalgia means π Thanks for showing me yet another view of England that tourists will not get to see as tours take us to jazzy snazzy places π

You are right – no-one will tour my out of the way places in the North – they will all be busy in London! π

Very nice photos, enjoyed your post. It is always nice to go back to the places you knew as a child. Brings back a lot of memories of your childhood.

Thank you very much π It is especially poignant for me, as my Mum died many years ago, and I no longer live in England, where I grew up.

Being able to “revisit the past” and experience the nostalgia always seems to “ground” me. It adds a sense of credibility to who I am and simply reinforces the answers to the “Who am I?” question. I feel sad for those whose childhood “landmarks” are no longer there, as they cannot have that that special feeling of reconnecting with their younger self.

I know what you mean. I was shocked to the core when we drove past my primary school many years ago – and it simply wasn’t there! It was like a part of my childhood had been snatched away.
