Welcomed Back Into the Fold

Little Monkey and Queenie 1

Little Monkey and Queenie 1

I have been taking Little Monkey to dog socialisation classes the whole time I have had her: so just over nine years now.

I used to go twice a week to start with, as she was very anxious and needed a lot of work. Now, I usually only go once a week, on a Wednesday. But last Saturday morning I decided to go along to class. I hadn’t been to that group for over half a year.

There were still quite a few owners and dogs that I remembered. Imagine my delight, when one after another, these dogs came over to greet me!

They just happily walked up to me and stood quietly by my side. They were saying, “I know you. You’re one of the pack. Welcome back.”

I gave them lots of attention. They seemed as happy as me to be reunited; and I felt oh so welcome.

The story with most of the dogs here at class is that they have problems! Maybe they suddenly started misbehaving, or maybe they are a new rescue dog that needs to learn a few manners. Very few are well balanced and they all need to learn better social skills.

When I first met Queenie, I went right up to her owner and started chatting away. She is so like my first dog, Lady. See below.

Now Queenie was there because she had started getting a bit snappy. So she wasn’t the easiest of dogs to get close to, especially with my anxious Little Monkey.

But dogs seem to read you by your energies and I adored Queenie straight off. So she responded, and there we were, Queenie and LM sitting side by side and tolerating each other.

You can see part of the class in the background here. (These photos were taken back in October 2013, just before I got Mr Spaghetti Legs.)

Queenie was the first dog to come up to greet me last Saturday. Others followed. LM remembered them too, so there was no problem.

And we had a great time!

Dogs can sense your energy level without a person saying a word. Mine do. 🙂
And they can sense if a person doesn’t like dogs too.
Sometimes it is a good idea to trust your dog. They sense things we can’t.
Our bodies give off energy that we sometimes don’t realise. Or lack of energy too.

I just saw a sign outside one of our more “creative” stores: “Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend, has never owned a dog!” Seems very appropriate here!

I’m convinced that dogs know a doggie person, or one who is not, and react accordingly. I’m dog mad, and I can only recall three in my lifetime that didn’t come to me for some fuss and attention. Breeds and size don’t matter to me. Maggie has learnt to share us, though she can sulk if we tend to give ‘an outsider’ just a little TOO much!
Glad you were remembered and welcomed back.

I think you must have a good energy for all dogs to come to you 🙂
And LM doesn’t mind who I give attention to – as long as the dogs leave her alone! 🙂 But it was good to be welcomed 🙂

    Lady sure is beautiful!
I can see the likeness to Queenie.
It’s so nice to attend a big dog party!

      haha 😀
The truth of course is that the Humans are the pupils. Dogs very much just react – so if you know how to treat them they instantly respond.
That being said, LM is in a league of her own!! 😀

You know, that is such a great point! I’m embarrassed to say I’d never thought about that before, but of course you are quite right. The humans are the pupils! 🙂

That is so nice! So many dogs need some social skills for various reasons and, sadly, so many owners just seem to think that it is intuitive. Ray was just like the dogs here (in this Post), in that he was never taught how to greet another dog correctly We presume he was removed from his Mom before she could teach him some basics. Here we are, 3 years later, and he is Mr Social! It is such a joy to see dogs interact in a sociable manner… and bonus if they treat me the same way! 🙂

      Thanks you, Colin 🙂
It’s true, so many people think letting their dog run round their yard is enough!
Over here, they now socialise dogs and puppies in the rescue centres, so they are easier to adopt, and insist new puppies are taken to further social classes.
Ray has certainly blossomed with you, and I’m sure you have learnt lots from him too 🙂
