It is officially winter here in Cape Town. The winter solstice in the Southern hemisphere, and our shortest day, is June 21st.
The sun will start returning now. Though to be honest, I can’t say it has been very far away!
To all of you in the Northern hemisphere, the nights will start drawing in!
post script: Our milkman said this to my Mother once, “Now the nights start drawing in!” on the day of the summer solstice. It really annoyed her. It was only just summer after all!
Summer Solstice tomorrow in Oz… Have a look, might blow you out

Lovely photos 🙂 Unfortunately I couldn’t see how to ‘like’ or comment?

I was just thinking last night when I went to bed (@9:30) and looked out the window to see it was still light out… “am I so old I go to bed before it’s dark?!?” Gesh! 😉
Time has flown this season, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it so far!

Well in the north of UK where I grew up, it only got dark very late, so you had to go to sleep in the light. And someone I follow who lives very far north, has 24 hours of daylight right now!
But summer is only just getting going when they call it ‘the start of summer’, or solstice.
Conversely for me, the worst of winter is still to come.

I’ll take your winter over mine! 😉
Sidenote: My auto correct traded winery for winter… ha ha! That would have been a true statement also! 🍷

Oooh Winery! Winter wouldn’t stand a chance! 😀

Yes, it is odd that here “oop North” summer has only just started, yet the nights will indeed be drawing in! 😉

haha But it will get warmer first. 🙂

I feel like I haven’t seen night for ages now. Thank goodness for blackout curtains.

I bet. 🙂 I follow someone even farther North – who has 24 hours of daylight right now!

Winter! We continue to remain bone dry and my neighbor, who is a farmer, is not a happy camper at all.

You need the right rains at the right time to farm. It must be a very stressful profession.

Yes indeed! I don’t envy my neighbor. And he doesn’t need any stress; he is 89 years old and can only drink (because of fluid around his lungs) less than a pint of water a day.

My goodness! He should be sitting with his feet up at that age! 🙂

Summer is just way too short a time in the Northern Hemisphere. (sigh)
Although, since it is summer now, I’m happy. 🙂

I wouldn’t worry too much. Summer is only just getting started up there 🙂

Today will be the longest day for me and rumor has it there will be a strawberry moon tonight. It always seemed ironic that the longest day of summer is also the first one.

I know! I think of the first day of Spring as the start of summer. 🙂
I’ve heard there’s a strawberry moon, but I don’t think I’ll see it for the rain clouds here. 🙂

It looked like a regular moon where I was.

haha Yes – but I learnt from Ramblingratz, that the full moon in June is called the Full Strawberry moon, because the strawberries are ripening. Also it was special because it was a full moon on the summer solstice – which last happened in 1967. 🙂

Ahhh, I knew there had to be something else to it.

Yes – tho I was quite prepared to look out for a red-tinted Moon! 😀

And later today you get a summer solstice post from us! As for the days getting shorter here, I try not to think about that – especially as our summer is just getting going!

Exactly what my Mum thought! 🙂
On the down side over here – winter has only just begun. But it’s OK – we really need the rain! Keep Telling Self! 🙂

Yes, you are right. When the days grow longer, I’m so looking forward to it. But the sun is high now until around 9:00 pm and I always look forward to shorter days with less sun around this time. It’s always a slightly melancholy thought, but it doesn’t annoy me. It’s a good reminder. 🙂

Yes, I love the changing seasons. 🙂 And it’s really not too bad here with winter daylight of 10 hours or so – not like in UK where my Mum was, where it starts getting dark around 4pm.
I love winter here, and feeling chilly! Summers are far too hot for me. 38C

Its a beautiful sunny day here but it is going to be hot: it could feel like 40c! Our winters in my area can reach -40 wind chill! And that’s not the coldest spot in Canada.

Wow – you really do have extremes there. 40C is way too hot for me too. Then again, it gets way too cold there also! 🙂
We have more rain today, so it is chilly, but great, as we do need it. 🙂
