The Dog Walk

Little Monkey Walk 1

Little Monkey Walk 1

It was such a lovely sunny, winter’s day that I decided to take Little Monkey on a nice long walk to the common, where there are open fields and trees.

I follow Sarah and Choppy on many of their dog walks. Choppy always poses so nicely for the camera and smiles away. I thought I’d see if I could capture a few photos of my own dog, Little Monkey, on one of our walks, so I took my trusty Canon camera along with me, tucked in my pocket especially for any photo opportunities that might arise.

Here is my dog, Little Monkey, on the way to the common; not exactly looking at the camera, or actually not at all! Obviously something much more interesting off to her left.

And off to her right too!

And even behind her, once arrived at the common.

Well, after all this sitting and behaving, she was let off the lead to do her own thing.

Any squirrels here?

OK I’m gonna try over here!

And here she is trotting back to me after squirrel chasing. But oops! She is in the restricted roped-off area! This is delicate fynbos (see previous post Fynbos) that must not be disturbed. She wasn’t to know, as she leapt the rope barrier in a single fluid bound, chasing the squirrel, that was also unaware of the restrictions!

Well, I like to think she did not do too much damage, as she’s not that heavy and her weight is distributed over all four feet.

Finally, after all those ‘bloopers’ and running free, I snapped the perfect shot, on the way home.

This is her sweet, contented face. So many scents tracked down, so many squirrels chased; the perfect outing.

post script: Hats off to Sarah and Choppy for their amazing captures, not just on dog walks, but dressed in all sorts of hilarious clothing too. I always thought it must be tricky to take these photos, but now I know exactly how hard it is.

Please note: No squirrels were harmed in the making of this post!

Only one of our dogs is “photogenic” the other two I think purposely look away from the camera..haha
These pictures are still very good though!

I also love your trees especially photo number 4. They look like trees from National Geographic Magazine. Not something we have here 🙂

She must have had a blast! I love those background trees… very different from Illinois! 🙂
Due to what happened to Gabbie, i now think that it is very smart to give dogs — as they age — fish oil supplements daily that are high in Omega 3. Very beneficial for preventing strokes and similar problems. Most vegetarians, too, are highly deficient in essential fatty acids, including Omega 3.

LM does enjoy being off lead and doing her own thing. 🙂 And yes, I like those trees too, and so do the squirrels! 🙂
I didn’t realise about the stroke protection properties of fish oil, but I do give my dogs a salmon oil capsule everyday, (for years now) and also a joint supplement with chondroitin and glucosamine, which I also take! But as I don’t like the salmon oil taste, I take Flaxseed Omega 3, 6, 9. As you say, often we are deficient in these supplements.
I do hope Gabbie continues to improve.:)

Seems like you are doing the right thing with your dogs and yourself, with essential fatty acids. I take Chia oil for myself (from Swansonvitamins.com), but i also take some Bayer fish oil (even though i’m a vegetarian). The plant essential fatty acids (including flax) contain ALA that is not easily converted into necessary DHA and EPA; many people cannot convert it at all. I have too much osteoarthritis (from lifting my handicapped students, when i worked) to take chances.
The chondroitin and glucosamine, in my opinion, are OK, but they can raise blood pressure, and don’t really work all that well. I, and now Gabbie too (along with fish oil), take Turmeric, which i think is much better. It’s a cox-2 inhibitor without the bad NSAID side-effects and it thins the blood preventing strokes. It works great for arthritis! It needs to be taken with natural plant or fish oil… as it is oil soluble.

haha Totally! She came to me as a Teenager – full of attitude, and Not looking at me! I’ve worked very hard on this, but she still often pulls this stunt. 🙂

Aw, don’t give up! It took me many years with LM, before I felt able to let her free, but I always check if there are any other dogs around. And I still take her to dog socialisation classes – every week – for over 9 years now! 🙂
