Wolf!
Occasionally I’ll give my dogs a nice big bone. This is the thigh bone of an ostrich.
At first it looked as though Little Monkey didn’t know quite what to do with it!
“It smells great, but what do I do with it?”
Note the paw in the air (anxiety) and the tongue (Yum!).
However, she soon got the hang of it; using her paw to claim her food and keep it from running away!
Eventually she realised it wasn’t going anywhere and, surprisingly, no-one else wanted any!
So she settled down to gnaw to her heart’s content.
Good! It is good for dogs to be in touch with a hunter instinct. I am giving my dog a bone but before always boiling in salt water. It is not good giving a blood meat to a dogs. My father is a Hunter, so he had teaching me about hunter dogs ✌

Interesting to know 🙂
I rarely give bones to my dog – this was a special treat. Also, there was no meat on it at all, it was just bone. 🙂

One of my previous dogs knew exactly what to do with a big bone – slobber all over it and then leave it on the bedspread! Lovely photos of LM 🙂

Great demonstration of the stress signs. She looks like she sure was enjoying it! I won’t be letting Bonnie have a look in case she gets jealous! 😀

haha I wasn’t sure if other countries would have bones this size. Best Bonnie doesn’t even get a sniff of this! 🙂

A dog and a bone is like “The old man and the sea”.
Wonderful photos, Scifi.

How long did/will it take a dog her size to finish a bone that size?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I tend to give it to her for an hour or so at a time, over several days. When she starts breaking it up into splinters to get at the marrow, I have to pick up all the slivers before I walk on them barefoot by the pool. I think if I just left it out she’d finish it in a few days. She’s quite fixated on it! 🙂

I love how you captured the tongue lick on the lips in the first photo. 🙂

We tried Maggie with a bone to encourage her to chew and she just wasn’t interested. Even cutting one up into smaller pieces resulted in them being left alone. She likes her meat though, just not working for it I suppose!

Ah, they’re all different, and Maggie is nice and healthy 🙂

Well that’s what I’ve heard and why we can buy these – but I guess every dog owner will have their own opinion! 🙂

A bone that size will keep her going for a while! 🙂

You’d think, wouldn’t you? 🙂
But we have to take it away from her after half an hour, or she’d just finish it off!
The worst is later on, when she has chewed it to fragments and you walk on a sharp piece by the pool in bare feet! Agh!!

Holy cow! I mean, holy ostrich! That is a big bone!
Breck does the “broken foot” stance also. We always ask him if his foot is broken. 😂
LM was eating it like Oreo, paws spread wide, not touching it while chewing. Breck holds his food like someone is going to take it.

I didn’t know a paw in the air was a sign of anxiety! Love learning new things. Dog body language is fascinating. Love your pictures. We also enjoy a good bone in this household! 🐶❤️
