This one tree of mine is totally confused!
You may think that seeing golden autumn colours now is nothing out of the ordinary.
But here in Cape Town it is summer; and will be for the next four months at least.
So what’s the story with this tree?
I have no idea!
It obviously thinks it’s in the Northern hemisphere and that winter is approaching.
Each year it catches me by surprise and it’s the oddest thing to see it so way out of sync with the rest of my plants.
But – it’s also kind of pretty!
I’m a bit late to the party! =-O
I can’t ID this tree from the photos, however, some trees do do weird things. In summer (for you, winter), silver maples get chlorotic (lack of iron) and turn bright yellow. Other tree’s leaves emerge red, then turn green. Mother Nature sure love’s variety!!
Clearly, if this tree has been doing it for years, it is its natural thing to do and is healthy.
Without too much info & other things being equal, if I were to bring a tree from my house and plant it at yours, it would adapt to your schedule.

Thank you for the info π Yeah, I thought that also, that wherever the tree is from, it ought to adapt to the seasons here. So maybe it is just one of those, like you say, that has brightly coloured leaves that then go green π

It has beautiful warm colors. Does the tree shed the leaves?

Thank you π It doesn’t shed the leaves entirely but seems to go straight on to new growth – It’s just an oddity! π

Lovely colors though. π

I would take a tree just starting fall now that we have snow – even in the spring!

Funny how contrary we are – because I’d take the snow, now that it is getting much hotter here! π π

Well, if you want to trade places for the next season, I would be all for it!

I’d be getting the best of the deal, because LM is harder to live with than Choppy, but unfortunately I am allergic to cats! So I’ll have to give this a miss. π

Is the colour a protection against the heat, Scifi?

That’s a good suggestion. π But the tree just seems to be out of sync with the seasons, as it goes through all the usual changes, but at the wrong time. When it starts its new growth it is just green again, not like a rose with red leaves for sun protection. π

A lot of the trees in my yard had odd colours for the time of year this summer.
Climate change?

Ah actually this tree does this every year for decades, so I can’t blame climate change – this time! π

It might be a transplant from a northern region.

It was here when we bought the house, so could easily be some ‘exotic’ northern tree π

I like it! A little reminder that we are feeling colder in the northern hemisphere π

It probably has some kind of stress like insects or too dry. It is pretty.

Actually it’s very healthy and will start new green growth again soon – I just think it’s an odd tree. π I like it because most of my trees are evergreen, so I rarely see these autumn colours, even in autumn! π

Confused or otherwise, itis happily a part of your garden landscape plus it adds color ha ha. I bet it is a species like one of our tropical trees that also turn golden yellow or parts of it. Yet it is hot hot summer all year round hereπ

Yes I think you’re right. π It is perfectly healthy otherwise. π
And since most of my trees are evergreen, it is lovely to see these autumn colours – even if it is summer now! π
