Perpetual Summer

Summer? 1

As I write this, temperatures are soaring to 36C. This is autumn in the Western Cape! Seriously?

We have Berg winds again. To understand what this means, open your oven door when you’re cooking pizza and let the hot air waft over you. This kind of heat is blowing in through my open windows and doors right now. There is nowhere cool to go. Even sitting under the trees provides no respite today.

Summer? 2

I am tired of wearing T-Shirts and shorts and sweltering all day!

I am tired of the soft bread in my sandwich toasting itself in the air while I eat it, so the last bite is decidedly drier and crunchier than the first!

I am tired of a perpetual summer that began last September/October, over 7 months ago!

Autumn!

How do I know it is not summer any longer, but autumn? My calendar tells me so, as does my neighbour’s deciduous tree.

Summer may be officially over, but so many plants are just starting their new growth. Look at my camellia bush; bursting to overflowing with buds:

And my newly planted little honeysuckle, that is flourishing:

Summer? 4

The impatiens in my hanging baskets, that keeps on producing flowers all year round.

Summer? 5

Perpetual summer? I think so!

Oh well, time for ice-wine by the pool!

    How long did the ice stay solid? Lol I get exactly what you mean. It was such a “treat” to be in the UK, get out of the shower, dry myself and still be dry as I was getting dressed ha ha
    Is it a dry heat where you are or humid?

      Oh the ice lasted long enough to finish the wine and get a refill! 😀
      Berg winds are dry – but just so hot. Otherwise it is often humid here unless we have a good breeze.

      Thanks 🙂 I was trying to get across the heat. The pool is freezing already, as temps are cooler at night. The last time I swam in February, I could hardly breathe it was so cold. Even the tough neighbourhood kids have not been in their pools for the last month.
      It doesn’t make sense, but it’s just what it is. SA is really a cold country with a hot sun. Sun goes away, it’s cold. 🙂

        I’ll have to go consult a globe 🌍
        I know it’s hot over there, but just how close are you to the equator/ South pole? Trying to equate your location to the northern hemisphere, I would expect you would have colder weather at some point during the year. Obviously, the weather currents make you hotter there than I’d expect.

        Jo’burg, 1400km nearer the equator than CT, and very much inland, gets freezing winters. I think the ocean keeps CT from falling below 9C all winter.
        In winter we get massive storm fronts hitting us straight from the South Pole, so it can get pretty nasty, just not too cold!

        Quick google says Cape Town is equivalent to Casablanca and Los Angeles in the Northern Hemisphere. But, I think the ocean makes all the difference here. 🙂

        Really? L.A.? Huh. It has to be nicer than that there 😉 I’ve spent a few vacations there, as my BFF lived there a few years. It’s hot, but I would have thought CT would be hotter. I’ll look into it 😉

    Ha ha its freezing here, but you can put on an extra jumper, but thats way too hot for me, but I suppose you get use to it. Love the little honeysuckle and the glass of wine, with the swimming pool……ha ha bet you don’t need to heat that at the moment 🙂

      Ah it is too hot to get used to and the pool is like ice! – I know, such a contradiction, but even the neighbour’s kids stopped swimming months ago.
      Like you, I prefer to be too cold, as then you can put more clothes on. 🙂
      Still, Berg winds are not every day – fortunately! 😀

        Thats amazing about the pool, and yes its better to be able to put more clothes on, a little heat is nice though. No I should think having a Berg wind everyday would be a bit too much 🙂

    I could feel my dread of the hot and humid days during the summer increasing with each word about your sweltering weather. Thank god there are beautiful flowers and wonderful glasses of ice wine to provide relief from the heat. Great post!

      Happy to oblige: it is how I get thro the worst of summer – by gazing longingly at snow photos from the frozen North.
