Confusion

Grapevine 1

Peeping out from seemingly dead branches, a few new leaves sprout on my grape vine.

You can still see the remains of last season’s bunches of grapes.

Grapevine 2

My grapevine normally only comes alive again after winter, when it suddenly bursts forth with bright green leaves all over the vines, in October.

The grapes ripen over the summer months, becoming large green bunches ready for picking towards the end of summer, in February.

I’ve no idea why my grape vine got confused.

Doesn’t it know it’s winter here in Cape Town, with more storms on the way?

Maybe it was too much sun a while back?

And we all know that only Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun!

      haha I see you live in UK? So I understand your comment, but here in Cape Town, it is sunny nearly every day. I think it was a cold snap that confused the grapevine. 😀

    LOVED the Noel Coward! Haven’t heard that for years! Very impressed by your grapes, Mum has one in a pot, and the little bunches of grapes are flowering at the moment…are they supposed to do that?? 😸🍇😸

      Thank you for noticing the Noel Coward. 🙂 I also hadn’t heard it since I was a kid.
      I don’t know about grapes flowering? I’ve never noticed flowers on ours – but maybe you have a special kind? 🙂

        haha You’re absolutely right, of course! In my defence, all I ever see on our vines is a sudden massive growth of leaves and then teeny tiny grapelets (as in my post Promises, which you’ve seen last Nov.) The flowers must be so tiny they just aren’t noticeable. We have the white Hanepoot grapes.

        They’re definitely looking more grape like now…no idea what sort they are but they are growing nicely…I’ll carry on leaving them alone! 😸🍇

    Huh. He is confused! 🙃
    Here, it would take a wild ride in the weather department for a woody plant to decide to leaf out at the wrong time. By you… I wouldn’t think it could be too difficult, but still odd.
    Here, woodies do their thing by temperature. It’s a hard explanation, however is not how warm it is, is how many cold days you’ve had. Has it been chilly (I say chili, but really mean just cooler than normal!)
    Let’s see what this guy decides to do. Maybe you’re only going to see a few leaves. Maybe he’ll decide to go rouge and completely leaf out!

      I’m pretty sure it will just be these few leaves, which will wither and die over winter. It’s only on the back vines that get more sun, not the ones at the front.
      It’s happened before over the years, and like you say, is probably some odd temps along the way. There was a bit of a cold snap the other week – like 10C in my lounge.
