I grew up in the North of England, where seeing beautiful countryside, green fields, sheep, hedgerows and dry stone walls is usual. (You’ll have seen these in some of my Yorkshire posts.) Viaducts are also a common occurrence.
A viaduct is a bridge constructed of several small arches to cross a valley. The ones I know are all railway bridges.
It was only when I travelled to other places, such as South Africa, that I came to realise that they were not universally well-known or common.
These viaducts in Yorkshire support railway tracks, with road traffic passing beneath. There are a great many of these beautiful old stone structures all around the area.
I snapped these photos through the car windscreen as my sister drove.
I like the effect of Closer, Closer, Wow!
I love seeing the old stone structures of England and great captures of the these and the clouds from the car!

Via duck? Vi not a goose or a chicken? π

Maybe it should be Via-Zebra, because at least that is a crossing. π

Nice π I guess it depends on the terrain quite a lot too. π

So pretty – and we don’t have many in our part of the U.S., but I do enjoy seeing them when we do come across them.

I loved these very old viaducts in England, too. Did you know that the word “viaduct” comes from Latin? It means that something leads over something else. Have a nice day, kind regards Mitza

Yes – it was the Romans who started building all these, along with Aqueducts. π

Viaducts do are picturesque… kind of glimpse of simple architectural pieces of different times. Different stones, sizes , they are different from each other π

Thank you Ady. π
Yes I like these structures that are functional but also pretty. Today, it would be built more functional and less beautiful!

I have always found them a little bit of a conundrum, because they are beautiful with their graceful curves… but they also total destroy a landscape. My love of trains rules that they are works of art, but I can imagine a lot of resistance to them when they were being built!

The railways did have a huge impact on the UK, but as many lines are still in use, I think it was worth it in the long term. π

I lived in England for almost 30 years and totally agree re the value of railways however, I would also agree with the value of motorways, but would not endorse them as assets to the landscape. π

haha I have to agree with you. I watched the M1 being built, as it cut right through open fields that used to have horses in them.
