Baboon Spider 1

You know you’re a Blogger when, on seeing a Baboon Spider on the kitchen wall, you stop your husband from putting it outside until you’ve grabbed your camera and taken a photo of it for your Blog!

I got my husband to hold a ruler near it so you can see the size. Note: This is a small one!

He couldn’t hold the ruler any closer or it would have run away. Also, out of deference to my more arachnid-challenged readers, I have made my photos small. Hopefully you do not spill your coffee this morning when you open my post!

Baboon Spiders are harmless to us – unless of course you have a heart attack on seeing one! As I said, this one is a small guy and yes he most likely is a guy, as the females tend to stay in their nests while the guys roam around looking for mates. They normally live outside in my vines (not the grape vines – the other ones) where the female can build a large egg sac of folded over leaves, wound round and sealed with silken thread, keeping her babies safe inside.

Still, they do give me a bit of a fright when I come across one when trimming the vines. They are just so big!

Even so, I have seen a wasp kill one and drag the heavy body up the side of the house to stuff it in a crack in between the bricks, where it will lay an egg on it. The wasp was pretty big too and had those dangly stingers which really hurt if they just touch you.

    Cool info about them. I don’t mind crawly things. I do mind them in the house! Wasps are one of my NONE faves as I usually get stung by one a couple times a year. I tried stopping one from entering a shed and he didn’t like that one bit and attacked me. And yes, I was stung! Hahaha.

      Well, it’s not a small Spider, but it Is a small Baboon spider. Actually there are some tiny Deadly spiders here, so size isn’t always a bad thing. At least I can See this one! 😀

    I admit being one of those husbands who catches house spiders and puts them outside, rather than kill them. After all, spiders can’t help being who they are, any more than humans can (and there are a lot more evil humans than ‘evil’ spiders!).

      I don’t mind spiders too much if they aren’t On me, or poisonous. I hate cockroaches (ours are over 2 inches long). And yes I can admire their unique survival abilities, while still wishing them dead!

      Brave man! I find your thinking philosophy akin to Buddhist philosophy that advocates no killing of any ruminants as they could be reincarnated relatives. Enjoyed reading this and appreciating your view.

        We have jumping spiders too. I think they are great fun, but their bite is quite sore.
        I understand you wanting to keep your distance from spiders if you react to their poison.

    You’re braver than me Sci. I’m better than I was, but anything that big would have me screaming for Hubby and the catcher kit. One evicted me from my lounge and I was sitting on the front step waiting for someone to come home and get rid of it. Kizzy, my GSD, just sat there and let it walk over her feet! And yes, I nearly had a heart attack once over one……. and it was made of rubber! Geesh. What a wimp!

      Aw I don’t think you are a wimp at all. I used to be terrified of spiders too. I read that we are not born afraid of them but are taught it, so I vowed not to teach that to my kids. This meant I had to pretend to look with interest at any creepy crawlie thing and gradually I stopped freaking out.
      I still Hate cockroaches and cutworm. Eugh!

    I am so sorry! This is yet another (shiver!!!!) reason I will never visit your country. Even as incredibly beautiful as it is. I did not toss my tea because, well, I wasn’t holding it. But I am awake now! ps: great shot!
