The Last Freedom

LM on the Green Belt 1

Little Monkey loves to roam free along the Green Belt. As you all saw in recent posts: Vixen; Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud; The Creature from the Black Lagoon etc.

She likes to track interesting scents and paddle in the stream.

It is wonderful to meander in the cool shade and reflect upon life.

Alas no more!

There have been too many incidents of dogs biting people or other animals. So now all dogs have to be on the lead or pay a heavy fine if caught off-lead.

Sadly a few irresponsible owners have ruined the Green Belt for all of us.

As you all know LM is reactive with other dogs, so we need plenty of space and for the other dogs to be well balanced and understanding with LM. Mostly the Green Belt dogs were like this.

There are still a few other areas where you are allowed to have your dog off-lead (who knows for how long) but I do not go there as I don’t feel safe. People have been attacked – by other people.

There are no dog parks here.

But I am glad Little Monkey had that one lastΒ walk in Freedom.

Just look at that happy little face!

post script: I apologise if this post appears multiple times in your WP Reader – or not at all (but then you won’t know!) I adjusted something in my Settings and then everything fell apart!

Thank you, but it is hard to have to give up that lovely place because of a few irresponsible dog owners. People, dogs and even horses had mingled freely all over the Green Belt for decades.

Doesn’t matter where you are in the world, irresponsible pet ownership causes various issues and loss of freedoms for well attending pet owners. Makes you just want to slap some people. Great pictures. Reminds me of a creek we played in when I was a kid.

It is so frustrating, as everyone got along fine for decades – till these few irresponsible people.
The stream is still flowing after the winter rains, but it will dry up quite a bit over the next 4/5 months. Streams and kids go together very well. πŸ™‚

We too have a leash By-Law (no longer than 6ft) but, while we do have off off-leash fenced areas, we never take Ray into one. The problem is (again) the people. They use the off-leash areas as a social meeting place while the dogs run unsupervised, and we have seen many dog being bullied by other dogs while its owner is involved in a coffee and chat!

The possibility of Ray responding to unwelcome attention dictates we err on the side of caution. It’s very unfortunate, but irresponsible dog owners abound!

It is so annoying that some people take no responsibility for their dogs. It really spoils it for the majority of good dog owners such as yourself.

Awwww, sweet LM will miss roaming free. Would it be a reasonable compromise to use one of those retractable leashes where you can let it out so she “feels” free and then reel her in when necessary? At least she can still go for walks with mom!

I’m not keen on those long leashes as I need Hands On with LM and at least a fighting chance of getting between her and another dog.
I realise as I read through this, that it sounds daft! But there is a difference to how LM and I walk when on, or off the lead.
But it’s OK. LM is quite old now so is happy to have a short walk and there is one small place still where I can let her off the lead for a sniff. πŸ™‚

haha It’s very muddy and the water is full of bacteria – which LM can handle, but I don’t want to risk it. And it’s just not the same as the dog wandering freely where it wants to.
Never mind, there is still one small area where I let her off lead. πŸ™‚
