Wherever I am girl, I’m always walking with you; I’m always walking with you, but I look and you’re not there.
– Cat Stevens, How Can I Tell You
I walked down to the library the other day.
On leaving the property I turned left and continued along the road to the end, so I could see clearly down all three roads before I crossed; checking for dogs.
At each road side I stopped and waited for you to sit, while I checked for traffic.
Once along the way I saw another dog across the road behaving badly; leaping in the air, circling the man, chewing on its lead. He was a massive dog that looked like a cross between a Ridgeback and a Boerboel and was way out of control. I instantly thought to check you, so you would not freak out.
But I look and you’re not there.
.
I first heard Cat Stevens sing this lovely song, How Can I Tell You, when I was a student. A housemate had the LP and I would play it often when they were all out. It doesn’t refer to someone you knew who is now gone, but rather to someone you never met, but the sentiment is the same.
It must feel most strange. Even though I didn’t want a dog, he had got under my skin. He and I have had a couple of days ‘home alone’. I know if he were gone how very much I’d miss him and our daily habits. Thinking of you.

Thank you so much.
It is amazing how quickly a new dog becomes an integral part of your life – Man’s best friend indeed. 🙂

I fell asleep on the hall floor today (I can sleep anywhere) and Ruben joined me we had a nap together, his head resting on my arm. Like I said, he has got under my skin.

Aw that is the coolest thing. A dog really does want to be part of a family. 🙂

OMD I haven’t been on here in months and clearly I missed something very important. I am going to read through some of your older blogs.

Oh my heart. I just saw. I am so sorry about, Little Monkey. We hope that each day gets a little easier for you. We know how long it can take but just remember, it will get easier. *ear licks* Noodle

Yes it is hard and does take time.
LM had a good long life and I was fortunate to share the last 12 years with her. 🙂

Thank you 🙂 And no worries; I was absent a while myself.

They are part of our family. ❤
From Walt Whitman:
Nothing is ever really lost, or can be lost,
No birth, identity, form—no object of the world.
Nor life, nor force, nor any visible thing;
Appearance must not foil, nor shifted sphere confuse thy brain.

I’m sure you miss her terribly. I wondered if you were looking, but didn’t like to ask.
One will reach into your heart and give a gentle tug. ❤

Thank you 🙂 The problem is that they All reach into my heart, but I have to choose one that I can cope with as the years advance! 🙂

I could almost feel the pain you still feel due to your loss of Little Monkey. They provide so much comfort and love. I love mine and they are helping sustain me since the loss of my wife. Thank you for introducing me to this song. The sentiment for me speaks volumes.

Aw I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your wife. My condolences to you.
It must be incredibly hard after so many years together, but I am glad your pets are comforting you.
This song does capture the feeling of missing a loved one.

So very sad. There have always been dogs by my side and when they are missing, the world feels incomplete for a long time.

This is so poignant. LM will always be with you, in part because you both learned from each other, and those life lessons will inform and inspire your relationships with your future fur babies (and humans). Sorry to preach. I’m just thinking about how much Fergus has influenced the way I relate to people and animals, with a more open heart and mind. ❤️

Thank you 🙂 Yes I did learn a lot from LM, not least of which was to be more patient, which is a good life lesson.

Lump in my throat, eyes unusually wet. 😥 It’s a painful process, no matter how many times you’ve been through it. I truly believe opening up our heart and home to another pet is the most loving way to remember the friend we lost. And it takes time to find a new friend that is the right fit. I have no doubt LM is with you when you’re looking at rescues…..she will guide you to the perfect match.

There is no shortage of rescue dogs needing a home here. It does take time to find the right one, but is worth the wait to get it right. And it is certainly easier to cope with the loss of a pet when you have other pets to take care of.
LM was unique and irreplaceable, but there is room here for a different dog, just as LM filled a space in her time. 🙂

You got me a bit misty-eyed there! 😢
I’ve not been without a doggo in my life for long. The heartbreak from losing such a close friend is devastating to me.
I’m not one to wallow. I usually bring a new friend into the house asap. No disrespect to my last friend, as I know they’d want me to be happy. 😢😊

It’s the first time in 20 years there’s no dog in the house. I have been looking at rescues but not found the right one yet. And yes, you don’t replace the one that’s gone, but rather make room in your heart for another.

That’s a wonderful way to say it.
Breck is 12 in June. He’s going to be another Mr. Spaghetti Legs, as he’s already had one knee surgery… Oreo doesn’t help with his ‘crash into everything’ ways 😔
I hope you do find a special doggo to love. 😊

Aw they do get quite wobbly sometimes, but still carry on regardless – despite Oreo! 🙂
I’m sure I’ll find my doggo and he can make his blog debut. 😀
