I’ve been putting food out for the doves and squirrels regularly this winter. I place a small pile of seed on top of an upturned tub and the birds happily peck away there.

When Sparky the squirrel comes, he chases the birds away and eats whatever he wants, undisturbed.

Sparky the Squirrel

He’d just chased these two Cape Turtle Doves off their food and I felt sorry for them, so scattered some seed on the ground by my garden chair. They quickly came to peck up the seeds, hence the reasonable close ups!

Cape Turtle Doves are quite large, grey and have that distinctive black neck band. We also get the smaller Laughing Doves; more colorfully pink and without the neck band. I like that there are so many different birds that choose to frequent my little garden. It makes for very entertaining coffee breaks!

A lovely pair and you helped them co-exist with Sparky on the other end. I always enjoy the life of nature that goes on in your garden! Stay safe Sci and happy weekend.

we had two pigeons we named Portly and Breast. they were HUGE and it was a wonder the branches didn’t break when they landed on them. They ere still going strong when we moved out!

When we lived in Kentucky, we used to get a lot of mourning doves attracted to our Balsam bushes. Loved to listen to them coo. Were quite tame. If you moved slowly, you could get quite close.

The Cape Turtle Doves are really pretty, and I like their neck band. They are much larger/plumper than the doves I see here. Their chests looked like polished pewter. Just beautiful. Sparky looks like he hasn’t missed a meal yet!!

Why wouldn’t all these lovely birds and critters frequent your beautiful gardens….you’ve created a wonderful oasis for them. Food, fresh water, and a measure of safety. You are a good person Sci.
    Your Haiku is perfect.

And Thank you very much. πŸ˜€
I didn’t used to feed the animals – because I didn’t want to encourage them to visit too much – with Little Monkey around! πŸ˜€

Yes I do remember that. πŸ™‚
Also, I just assumed you were commenting on the plumpness of the birds because they would make good eating! πŸ˜€
