Pink Freesia

Latest addition

Shyly showing her colours

All pretty in pink

.

My freesia bulbs continue to open in a variety of colours. The latest is this pretty pink one.

So far it is the only pink, among many white, red, purple and yellow.

At about R3 a bulb, these were definitely a good buy!

.

R3 is about 15p in UK, or 21c in USA.

Pristine white petals

And beautifully scented

Nature’s perfection

A few months ago, I planted 30 brand new freesia bulbs in my brightly painted plant pots on my stoep. I also have about a dozen old bulbs that I replanted.

I waited with bated breath, as you can imagine, watching carefully as my new freesias popped up little shoots, and then larger leaves, until finally buds appeared.

The colour of the very first freesia?

White!

Totally in keeping with my colourless rainbow from last post, giving up the ghost.

Regardless, it is stunningly beautiful;

And the scent is divine!

Purple Freesia 2

I love finding great big fat raindrops on my plants.

Purple Freesia 3

Not just because it means that rain has fallen, but because it is so beautiful; nature enhanced.

Purple Freesia 4

Of course, with or without raindrops, I do like my purple freesias;

Purple Freesia 5

And their subtle, heavenly scent.

Red Freesia 2

Most of my few surviving freesias are yellow, so it was lovely to find this solitary red one popping up in an abandoned flower pot; providing a welcome warm colour in our most changeable season.

Red Freesia 3

One day the sun bakes down ferociously, then the next temperatures drop rapidly, with driving rains and howling winds.

Red Freesia 4

Throughout it all, this brave little freesia just keeps on blooming.

Hybridisation

.

We used to have freesias of many different colours, but over the years the yellow ones have tended to dominate. I don’t know why. I also had one white freesia this year.

Sometime after all the freesias had died down, this last flower shyly peeped out.

Freesia 2

She is a creamy colour that seems to be a lovely hybrid of the yellow and white plants.

The colour makes me think of Cadbury Creme Eggs. Mmmmm

I also like the shape of the older flower drying out towards the bottom. It sort of looks like a squid!

post script: The answer to last post’s movie trivia quiz, “Who said ‘Like molten steel’?” is Leslie Nielsen in the 1995 comedy “Rent a Kid”. He would compare the oddest things to molten steel. eg This glass is as clean as molten steel.

Points for effort go to Samanthamurdochblog and A Curious Introvert. Thanks for playing along.
