My Devices

Devices All Three

Some of you have wondered what cameras I use for my photos.

I have three, but mostly use my little point and click Canon.

Canon Digital IXUS  95 IS

With a resolution of 10 Megapixels and a 3.0 optical zoom lens.

Devices Canon 1

Although it is quite old now, it is extremely forgiving and takes decent pictures no matter what I ask of it. You can see that the poor thing has been dropped a few times, resulting in the dents in the zoom.

Devices Canon 2

It somehow manages to take a shot in focus even if the subject is moving, or more usually, I am moving! It automatically adjusts for light and speed.

And it fits nicely in my pocket!

I also have a better quality Nikon camera.

NIKON D3100

With a resolution of 14.2 Megapixels and a 3.0 optical zoom lens (the same zoom as the Canon.)

Devices Nikon 1

It takes much better photos, but even on Auto (which I mostly use!) is not very forgiving. I have to have a very steady hand, make sure I am not too close to the subject and that the subject does not move.

Devices Nikon 2

I’ve played around with the settings on semi-auto, to get better close ups with more bokeh. I select the aperture (f stop) and the Nikon selects the shutter speed (ISO).

Yes I can hear you laughing at me! Never mind, I have fun taking my photos.

You can see a selection of Nikon photos, from when I was learning to use the camera, in my Nikon-ography series.

Then there is my Samsung Galaxy Smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy J3 2016

The camera has a resolution of 8 Megapixels. Zooming in does not improve the quality of the photo.

Devices Galaxy 1

However, there is the Selfie option, with the added bonus of a “Beauty” setting. If you set this to the maximum, you won’t have any wrinkles at all!

Devices Galaxy 2

I really like the colour in these photos and the camera is also fairly forgiving.

But – and this is a very big but – you have to have a very steady hand! I have taken countless blurred photos because the technique I use with my Canon simply does not work with my Galaxy. You cannot point and click and walk away with a decent photo. You have to point, click and hold while the camera phone focuses, then either wait for it to finally take the shot, or click again.

So there you have it. Three ways I take my amazing (ahem!) photos. Each has its strengths and weaknesses and I choose the device according to the shot I’m trying to achieve.

Sunday Musings #184

I wonder what my kids are going to tell their kids . . . “It was so rough back in my day, I didn’t get a phone till 4th Grade and sometimes the wi-fi didn’t always work upstairs.”

– Unknown

Yes, this is exactly what they’ll say, because by then the whole world will probably be linked by neural implants*, with instantaneous access to all the data you could ever wish for!

.

Aaaaggghhh!!

We had no internet the whole of Sunday!

No, I didn’t spill my coffee over the new Router!

I did my morning chores then sat down with my laptop and a cuppa to do my Sunday post. WordPress would not load. OK, it happens. Maybe WP is working on their site.

So I did some gardening; hacking back vines behind the bougainvillea, which I really don’t like doing.

When I tried again later, there was still no internet.

We had nothing all day.

I don’t know what was going on, but we weren’t alone. A very large area of Cape Town was off-line.

This was more than frustrating as I had arranged to chat online with my sister in the UK. I hadn’t spoken to her for weeks, because of my previous internet problems, (albeit self-inflicted!) I had to cancel.

By 10 pm there was still no connection and the Router had finally given up trying; now showing a solid red internet light!

This morning I automatically checked the internet access.

Wheeeeeeeee! We’re Back!

So here is my Sunday Musings on a Monday!

*post script: While I was simply being amusing here, the reality may be a lot closer than we think. Read this: Elon Musk hopes to put a computer chip in your brain.

Sunday Musings #183

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting the bull not to charge because you are a vegetarian.

– Dennis Wholey

Yep, life isn’t fair!

But I do believe that what goes around comes around and ‘being good’ wins out in the end: even if the bull doesn’t know it!

This one’s for DD.

Great Expectations!

Hard Times Book by Charles Dickens

So, after eight days, they finally delivered our new Router this morning.

Only it was the wrong one and we still have no wi-fi.

Great Expectations turned to Hard Times!

Yet in the grand scheme of things, I’d rather be without internet than without electricity or water!

post script: Charles Dickens published Great Expectations in 1861 and Hard Times in 1854.

Sunday Musings #182

I turned my phone on Airplane Mode and threw it in the air. Worst transformer ever!

– Bill Murray

Sometimes technology is out to get you. Sometimes you help it along!

post script: My Router is trying to recover after I spilt my coffee over it. Thank you for all your kind words.

I don’t particularly miss the internet, though I do miss contact with my family overseas and my Blog friends.

As to the rest, I admit to buying a little data for my phone, so I could continue my 790 day Duolingo streak. After all, it would be nice to get to 1000 days!

And I hope to be re-connected sometime next week. See you then!

Ducks cannot read!

Can’t you read the danger sign?

Effluent waters!

Ducks swimming 2 – No Swimming Sign

Since these ducks cannot read, they swim regardless. I guess it goes hand in hand with their quack having no echo!

Still, they looked perfectly healthy – and happy!

post script: We met a man while walking round the wine estate and he told us that this little pond had filled up 18 inches with the recent rain. However, you can see that it is still seriously empty, as are all our proper dams.
