I’ll Be Home Again on Christmas Day

I left home when I was 18, but still went home every Christmas.

I left England when I was 21. In the following years, before my parents both died, I was only “Home on Christmas Day” three times.

Though I made my own family Christmases here in South Africa, it is just not the same, celebrating Christmas in a very hot country, in the middle of summer.

Christmas will always feel a little sad to me.

So here is Elvis to sing it like it is.

Wishing those of you who celebrate it;

Merry Christmas;

and those of you who do not;

Happy Holidays.

And sparing a thought for those who are lonely or sad at this time of year and sending you a Sunbeam!

post script: In the spirit of re-using last year’s Christmas wrapping paper, I am re-cycling last year’s Christmas post; because you can’t say it any better than Elvis.

Traditions fall away or are no longer viable, (you can’t build a snowman without snow); so you have to start new ones. This is the second time I have recycled this post and it is now my new tradition.

If you have trouble trying to watch this video, you could try here Elvis 1,  Elvis 2, or Elvis 3, or else just search on YouTube for “Elvis, I’ll be home on Christmas Day.” It is worth the effort to hear Elvis singing this lovely song.

    Dear Scifi, I know what you mean. Years ago I went in shorts and t-shirt through christmas decorated streets. It seemed surreal to me but when I saw the others in their warm cloth, looking at me, I knew was the

    I can’t imagine spending Christmas in a hot place. I’m not sure how I’d feel about it. Hot weather and Christmas are just two things I keep in separate parts of my mind and just don’t seem to go together at all. Incidentally, thank you for the link to the video. I’d never heard that Elvis song before. I’d expected his version of the “I’ll be home for Christmas” that they often play in my local coffee shop around this time of year. When I looked more carefully, I noticed his song has an extra “again” in the title. Anyway, it’s a good song. Elvis has such a distinctive voice and singing style. 😀

      I’m very happy to have introduced you to a ‘new’ Elvis song. 🙂 He made many Christmas ones and “I’ll be home for Christmas” seems to be played a lot more than this one I like, “I’ll be home on Christmas Day”. Happy Christmas! 🙂

      Thank you 🙂
      It’s the same thing here for us, when Europeans sit outside in the middle of the day in the searing sun – to get a tan!! Whereas we locals avoid the harsh sun at all costs. You will tan enough just in the few minutes it takes to walk to you’re car! 😀

    Thank you for sharing this Christmas tradition and you’re right, you can’t say it any better than Elvis. For me, nostalgia and sadness have always accompanied the joy and plenty of Elvis during the holiday season and some days it still catches me by surprise. Have a wonderful holiday season and Merry Christmas!

      A Very Merry Christmas to you GH 🙂 I can’t be too sad when I have WP friends like you to celebrate with. 😀
      Yes, we need a walk in fridge, as the only ice I’ll be seeing is in my vodka! 😀
      Thank you for all the lovely little emoticons, much appreciated. Sorry but I don’t have these on my laptop, so it’s 🙂 as usual! 😀

    Our Christmases are usually quiet, these past three being spent with MOH on Christmas Day, though this year we are not staying over from Christmas Eve until Boxing Day. I love the idea of a family Christmas, but sadly we don’t get to meet up with them now. Saying that though, Hubby and I have never had a bad one together, and that I wouldn’t change for the world. Merry Christmas Sci. 🙂

    As i have commented on various occasions, for all the potential benefits of emigrating, that move comes with a very high price. Like you, I will not forget the “cost” of putting so much distance between me and my family in UK. Have a wonderful time over the holidays, and may your 2017 dreams all come true! 🙂

      Thank you Colin 🙂 Many people will not quite understand what I am talking about.
      Happy Christmas to you and your family (which includes Ray of course!) 🙂
      And all the best for 2017.
