I Shall Be Home on Christmas Day

I left home when I was 18, but still went home every Christmas.

I left England when I was 21. In the following years, before my parents both died, I was only “Home on Christmas Day” three times.

Though I made my own family Christmases here in South Africa, it is just not the same, celebrating Christmas in a very hot country, in the middle of summer.

Christmas will always feel a little sad to me.

So here is Elvis to sing it like it is.

Wishing those of you who celebrate it;

Merry Christmas;

and those of you who do not;

Happy Holidays. 

And sparing a thought for those who are lonely or sad at this time of year and sending you a Sunbeam!

 

post script: In the spirit of re-using last year’s Christmas wrapping paper, I am re-cycling last year’s Christmas post; because you can’t say it any better than Elvis.

Traditions fall away or are no longer viable (you can’t build a snowman without snow) so you have to start new ones. This is the fourth time I have recycled this post and it is now my new tradition. My Old Faithful (followers) will no doubt remember this post and join in the tradition.

    Merry Christmas from the City of Elvis. We don’t get snow for Christmas round here either. Once in a while we see some of the white stuff around Jan/Feb but not for Christmas.

    For perhaps the first time in my life, I’ve spent this Christmas Day in my own home without any family but for Fergus. I miss My Darling Husband so much, but I’ve been grateful for the peace of not making a lot of motion and commotion to satisfy other family members’ ideas of what the family holiday should be.

      Christmas Day itself can be a little overwhelming with a lot of family and trying to fit in. I’m glad that you had your own little Christmas with Fergus, even if you were missing your husband.

    I went into the military at 17. Was lucky enough to be stationed close enough to home to be able to visit. Parents are long gone, but I don’t think I have been “home” more then 3 times in the last 50 years. Have lived a lot of places so home became werever we were living at the time. But memories of my childhood still reside there. So, from me and Elvis, a very Merry Christmas to you and LM.

    I was in my late 20’s when I left my family in UK to come to Canada and, like you, that move totally limited future contact with them. Whereas I have many happy memories of my Mum, my Dad and by older sister, I am only too aware that emigrating came with a very high price… but it is still Christmas, and a time to celebrate life! 🙂
