I’d like to say a big Thank You to all of you who wrote such lovely messages of condolence on hearing of Mr Spaghetti Legs’ passing.
Earthstills wrote a beautiful special tribute post For Mr Spaghetti Legs.
I was very touched and comforted by these outpourings of love for an old dog.
You can read a little about Mr Spaghetti Legs’ origins here, Portrait of a dog #5ย or any other stories about him by clicking on Mr Spaghetti Legs in the Wags (Tags) or Categories on my blog.
Apart from the sadness at the loss of a much loved friend, it was made harder by the fact that I had already booked Little Monkey in to the vets that day to have her teeth cleaned and a few lumps removed. So I took both dogs to the vets that morning and came home alone. The house was very, very empty; not even the solace of hugging LM as she was in hospital.
While LM was at the vets, we cleared up the heavy plastic sheeting that we had put down on the floors because of SL’s incontinence.
I went to fetch Little Monkey in the early evening, quite late because they had been very busy at the vets doing spays etc (they spay and neuter animals from rescue organisations) so LM was only operated on in the afternoon.
It was the most surreal experience to sit in the vets waiting room and have them bring out LM after her op. She was so calm to the point of being placid. She sat by me as the vet discussed the procedures and what meds I must give her and what to expect. I got a glimpse into what she might have been like with a different puppyhood, where her anxieties had been addressed and she had been encouraged to be calm and brave. So, yes, she was doped up on anaesthesia and morphine; but she was awesome!
Normally whenever I am at the vets, LM pants rapidly the whole time and her whole body trembles. She fixates on the exit and will not relax till she is outside and back in the car. It is exhausting for me to sit with her like this, as I absorb all her stressful energy.
When Little Monkey got home that evening, she walked all over the house and garden looking for her old friend, Mr Spaghetti Legs, and whimpering. It took her a long time to go to sleep that night.
I think that being drowsy from the anaesthetic, and the plastic sheeting not being there, made her more confused. The last time her old house mates died (Madam and TJ) four years ago, she didn’t react at all.
Also, it just goes to show how very much SL helped LM, gave her confidence and kept her calm.
They were a little pack, to which I had the privilege of belonging.
I am so sorry to just hear the news. It’s heartbreaking that our furry ones don’t live as long as we do. Hope you have had time to mourn and adjust a little by now.

Thank you so much Lynn. It was hard, even though I only had SL for 3 years (he was very old when I adopted him) he was very much part of the family. But it does get easier and you start remembering all the funny little quirks. Little Monkey definitely helps too. ๐

I am convinced dogs grieve. When I lost my GSD, we buried her in the back garden, and my collie stood to attention for ten minutes, pawed the mound twice, then came inside. He was morose for several days and I was quite worried, though I managed to get him to eat and drink, though it wasn’t very much. LM will miss her friend. I think your readers do too.

Aw, that is so sad about your Collie.
And thank you. LM is back to her usual bouncy self again. ๐ The anaesthetic confused her, as she usually knows when her old companions are dying. This was the first time one of my dogs has reacted when another has died – though I hear all the time of dogs grieving. I don’t know if it is because mine are adult rescues who have had to learn to adapt rapidly? Still, it makes it easier for me.

Lovely and interesting post, even though it’s sad. I hope you and LM will feel better soon.

You have had a lot of loss recently; your elder, and then SL, you are brave and an inspiration to shine as you do and bless us with your loving ways and compassion while you are going through this most difficult and challenging time.

This is a very touching, sweet posting. We’ve lost dogs, over the many years, and realize (all too well) what this is like. They really are family… (sometimes even better). Once, one of our dogs, Lucy, had to be put to sleep because of an incurable brain tumor. My wife took her to the vets, since i had to work that day. When i got home from work, i told my wife, Marla, the exact time that Lucy passed, to the minute. Marla said, “How did you know?” I felt it. My mother was like that too with things. Dogs are fantastic creatures and we can have a real connection with them. They don’t live as long as we do… but it’s not the duration, it’s the quality and the love. ๐

That was quite a connection you had.
Yes, I only had SL not quite 3 years, so a very short time, but he’s forever in my heart now.

I spent a lovely hour looking at all of Mr SL posts and I didn’t know the he had spent so long in the kennels, but as you say, he was well looked after and loved, but how lovely that he spent his retirement with you and LM. We can’t have any more dogs, four is enough, when they come to work with us everyday, so we have adopted two, that can not be re-homed, specials needs dogs and we pay for them each month, it makes me feel better that I can’t have anymore and most important it helps the dogs. Hugs for you and LM ๐

Thank you so much – and for reading past posts about the old boy ๐
How kind of you to care for those dogs that have to stay at the centre. I’ve had three dogs before, but will only have LM now, as she is almost impossible to match – I was very lucky to find SL.

I know what you mean about LM, our last german shepherd, Rocky, should have been an only dog, he did tolerate Nipper, but Nipper is really laid back, but if Nipper had gone first we would not have had another one, but unfortunately Rocky died at 3 and Nipper is now 7, with more doggies now than I think even he really likes -: -:

Hugs to you.. I hope sl finds all the wet sticks and furry friends in heaven ..

Thank you so much. I’m honoured you showed your Mum my doggie post – I hope you do get your puppy ๐
SL was very very old and stayed as long as he could. LM and I were heart broken, but SL is at peace now and with his friends. Time heals.

2 best buddies or rather 3 best buddies including Sci…I feel the emptiness too as I looked forward to both SL or LM escapades in your posts daily. Hugs to you both and I sincerely hope you will brighten up your home with a companion for LM and you soon…another dog needs rescuing and getting TLC from you and LM.๐

If I had any other dog besides LM I would look for another rescue dog, but LM is so hard to match, it took me a whole year to find SL after my other old dogs died. As LM is now 11, I’m just going to have her. I can’t get a younger dog, because she can’t handle it and runs away, and then they chase her. It’s a pity, but LM can’t help how she is.

He will be greatly missed by many of your followers. He always showed such a sweet calmness in his photos. I can totally see how he was able to keep LM a bit calmer. He did for me! ๐ Just look at that cutie face!! I always loved his little beauty mark on his face, it’s in the same place as mine ๐
He will always be in our hearts and minds as a great buddy. I hope that LM and yourself can smile about him soon (instead of crying) and remember his goofy, calm self. Take care, friend! ๐

Thank you again for this ๐ I was surprised by how much SL seems to have impacted on my readers.
Monday night and Tuesday were the worst days, but LM is pretty much back to her usual goofy self, and as you say, I can begin to remember SL’s funny little quirks, of which he had many! ๐
