Meet Greyfriars Bobby; a little Skye Terrier, famous for guarding his master’s grave in the Greyfriars Churchyard for 14 years. He is immortalised here in a bronze statue mounted on a granite plinth, which was originally a drinking fountain for both people and dogs.
I had always intended to visit the little statue of Greyfriars Bobby, when I was in Scotland, but hadn’t managed it and my holiday was nearly over. Quite by chance, I found myself very close to his statue one morning, when I had been wandering round Edinburgh Old Town with my daughter Pix and her husband.
So we finished our croissants at the outside cafe on a narrow cobbled street and wandered over to the statue.
There were many people congregated around the little dog, posing for their photos to be taken alongside. It is supposed to be good luck to touch his little nose; which explains why it is golden and not black like the rest of his old bronze statue.
We didn’t have to wait long for a gap in the crowd and duly took our photos with Bobby too.
.
A funny incident happened while we were waiting for our turn. A man came marching towards the crowd, with a large black Rottweiler. He stormed straight through the middle of everyone, shouting loudly and aggressively, “Excuse Me!” as he barged his way through, barely giving anyone time to get out of his way.
My daughter explained that many Scots people hate the Edinburgh Festival in August, as the streets are thronged with happy tourists. Well I understand that, but really, all the angry man had to do was walk on the other side of the street to Bobby’s statue. That side was empty!
Of course there are going to be crowds round every tourist spot during the Edinburgh Festival!
It is similar here in Cape Town during the long summer school holidays in December and January. We are over-run by tourists from other parts of South Africa, such as Jo’burg, and also from overseas. So we locals avoid the tourist spots during these months, or we go very early in the morning, before the tourists have finished their breakfasts!
Sorted! No need to get all grouchy and barge through the poor visitors!
Love the story of Grey Frairs Bobby! I use to love watching the film when I was little 😊 so cool that you actually got to see the statue!

Thank you 🙂 His statue is very cute – you should definitely visit if you’re ever up in Edinburgh. Bertie and Croc would like him 🙂

I think there is a movie about this dog, I seem to remember one from the early 70s/late 60s, British. Maybe with Peter Sellers?

Yes you’re right – there is a movie about the little dog, but I’m not sure who is in it 🙂

1961 Disney movie is one I’m thinking of–starring Donald Crisp, apparently–a dead ringer for Peter Sellers, LOL.

Dogs rock! 🙂
We were just at the vets… and i was a taken aback a little with the costs related to our adopted dog’s newly discovered Addison’s Disease. However, today, the woman, who was working as a physical therapist on my wife Marla’s Carpel Tunnel operated hand, said she spent over $15,000 on her rescue dog’s disorder; plus she has another rescue dog with allergy problems that cost $100 a month. Wow!

Unfortunately, meds are just as expensive for animals as for humans. Even LM has costs these days.

Ha ha we patted Bobbies head this year, a little bit earlier in the year. We also meet a beautiful real life Sky Terrier on the Isle of Sky as well………I would really like one, but 4 dogs are enough 🙂

Yes, 4 dogs is a handful! 🙂

I’m so glad you got to see the statue – even if you had to deal with a less-than-polite local!

Thank you 🙂 Really, I don’t worry about the grumpy people I come across. They have to live with themselves! 🙂

I remember seeing the film as a child and cried my eyes out. I saw it again as an adult and cried even harder. It’s a heart warming story, and the media have reported several similar in recent years.

Oh dear! Yes, I found out about the film when I was researching Bobby. Nice you got to see it – twice! 🙂

You were not kidding about saying how pet friendly UK is. Such a lovely statue and a shiny nose from all that rubbing. Reminds me of Rome where a statue of Christ had worn out legs as devotees kissed and touched it for blessings. Bobby is indeed a loyal pet. As for the rude little man, he must be having a bad day😉

Gosh! You wouldn’t think that simply touching a bronze statue would wear it down, but it just shows what happens when thousands of people constantly do so.
As to the rude Scotsman; he could easily have walked on the other side of the road! I think he enjoyed being brusque! 😀

No offense to the Scots but I always thought Scots behave brusque…one of my ex boss was like that to begin but after getting to know me, he became rather nice! So maybe that is a typical Scottish trait! 😉

Yeah – I think pretty much the whole of the north of UK – as Yorkshire folk are like that too. 🙂

The Scots do have a reputation for being brusque but they still have all those squishy bits tucked away inside. Dogs could give us a lesson in loyalty! 14 years!

Oh it was just One Man and his Dog after all! 😀
I don’t mind brusque – they are certainly that in Yorkshire, where I grew up!
And I think there was some poetic licence with Bobby’s Tale, but I still find it charming. 🙂
They put a statue up to him after all 🙂

I’ve lived in Florida… America’s winter (and spring break) vacation destination, along with all the snow birds. Yes, during spring break (March thru April) is was easier to just stay home. 😛

I pretty much hibernate for the “silly season” here. Even venturing to the local shops for bread and milk you have to battle the crowds!
